If you’ve ever used Kamiti Road, then you know, hii barabara ni story mob. From Kahawa West, Githurai 44, Zimmerman all the way to Roysambu, it’s one of the busiest roads in Roysambu. Every morning and evening, it’s packed, matatus, bodabodas, school buses, private cars- all trying to squeeze through a narrow road built years ago when Roysambu’s population was still small.

Today, things have changed. Roysambu has grown big, both in people and business. Thousands of new apartments, schools, and small and big businesses have come up, but the road has remained the same. No expansion, no proper matatu stages, and 80–90% of the time you’re stuck in traffic.

The Daily Hustle on Kamiti Road

People waste hours on Kamiti every single day. Traffic jams start early and don’t end till late. During rush hour, you can literally walk faster than cars move. Yet, this road has no proper bumps, no signages, no pedestrian crossings, no street lights, and honestly, hakuna order. Everyone just struggles to survive the chaos.

The ‘new drainage’ works done recently by the current leadership haven’t helped either. Instead of solving the flooding problem, the system now drains stormwater into the Gatharaini river, creating even more mess downstream. It’s disappointing because we expected better, we expected planning that matches the growth of our community, not quick-fix projects that look good on paper but fail in real life.

And to make matters worse, there are no designated matatu stages. Matatus stop anywhere, causing confusion and more traffic. Pedestrians are forced to walk dangerously close to moving vehicles because there are no proper designated crossings. It’s risky, frustrating, and unfair for the thousands who use this road daily.

Why Expansion Is No Longer Optional

Let’s be honest, Kamiti Road can’t handle Roysambu anymore. The population has exploded, traffic has tripled, and development is everywhere. Expansion is no longer a luxury; it’s a necessity.

That’s why myself, James Munene Thuku together with Roysambu residents decided to petition for the expansion and proper upgrade of Kamiti Road. Not for politics, not for show, but for the ordinary mwananchi who wakes up every day to hustle and just wants a smooth, safe road to work, school, or church.

Our petition calls for:

  1. Expansion of Kamiti Road to ease traffic and support Roysambu’s growing population.

  2. Proper drainage systems that actually work, not ones that spill into sewers into the river.

  3. Well-marked pedestrian paths, bumps, and lights for safety.

  4. Designated matatu stages and bus bays to bring order and reduce congestion.

  5. A joint effort between county and national governments to ensure accountability and quality.

We’re not asking for too much, just fairness. Our taxes should show in the roads we drive on.

The People Have Spoken

The most beautiful thing about this petition is the massive support from residents. From Zimmerman to Kamae, Githurai to Kahawa West, Marurui to Kiwanja, Kahawa ward to Njathaini people are tired of stories. They want action.

Business owners have shared how much they lose in fuel and time. Parents talk about their kids waking very early in the morning to beat traffic and walking in traffic with no crossings and footpaths. Matatu drivers complain about police chaos and lack of stages. Everyone agrees; Kamiti Road must change.

One mama with a kibanda in Kahawa told me,

“Mhesh Munene, hii barabara ikitengenezwa, hata biashara zetu zitapona. Tunataka maendeleo, si maneno.”
And she’s right. Development means dignity.

Time for Real Leadership

For too long, Kamiti Road has been used as a political tool, a campaign promise recycled every election. But that era must end. Roysambu deserves leadership that listens, plans, and delivers, not leadership that waits for the next election cycle to act.

Real leadership means walking with the people, understanding their pain, and working to fix it, even when there’s no funding or camera around. That’s the kind of leadership I believe in.

The Road Ahead

The journey to transform Kamiti Road has begun. The petition is live, the people are speaking, and the movement is growing. This is not just about a road; it’s about restoring order, dignity, and opportunity to our community.

Kamiti Road represents the heart of Roysambu; busy, alive, full of potential, and it’s time it reflects that energy.

Together, we will make it happen.
Because Tuko One, Tuko True and RoysambuNiHome and, Together, We Can Do More.
